Wedding Rings

Wedding rings have a romantic history dating back to the most ancient of civilizations and are said to have originated in Ancient Egypt, fashioned from rushes, hemp or braided grass.

The Romans continued the tradition of the ring, or ‘wedding band’ by utilizing iron as the chosen material, and by the Middle Ages gold was most often used, frequently decorated with precious gemstones.

Initially the wedding ring was worn predominantly by the woman, with the introduction of the men’s wedding ring becoming a newer tradition that grew rapidly during the Second World War. Continuing with its theme of love and commitment, this was considered a direct result of the prolonged separation of the male soldiers from their loved ones, and provided a symbolic reminder during the harshness of war.
